What this tool does

Two oscillators, one per ear, one live beat

This generator runs two sine-wave oscillators in your browser — one panned hard-left, one panned hard-right. When you wear headphones, your left ear receives one frequency and your right ear receives another. Your brain perceives the difference as a phantom pulsing beat.

If the left ear hears 200 Hz and the right hears 210 Hz, the beat frequency is 10 Hz — squarely in the alpha band. Your brain synchronizes its electrical activity toward that rhythm, a phenomenon called brainwave entrainment.

The oscilloscope shows the combined signal as a scrolling waveform. The live band indicator updates as you change the frequencies — watch it shift from ALPHA to THETA to DELTA as you decrease the right-ear frequency toward the left-ear carrier.

How do I use this binaural beat generator?
Pick a preset (Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, or Gamma) or enter your own left- and right-ear frequencies. Put on headphones — binaural beats require different frequencies in each ear to work. Press Start Generator. The live readout shows the beat frequency (the difference between the two tones) and the brainwave band that frequency falls in. Adjust volume with the slider. Use the session timer to track how long you've listened.
Why do binaural beats need headphones?
Binaural beats depend on your brain creating the beat by combining two slightly different frequencies — one from each ear. If both ears hear both frequencies (as happens through speakers), the effect is lost. For the generator to work properly, use headphones, earbuds, or AirPods. If you don't have headphones available, consider isochronic tones or monaural beats instead — both work through speakers.
What frequencies should I choose?
Depends on your goal. Delta (1–4 Hz) for deep sleep. Theta (5–8 Hz) for meditation or subconscious work. Alpha (8–13 Hz) for calm focus or creative flow. Beta (14–30 Hz) for active concentration. Gamma (30+ Hz) for peak performance states. Research suggests low carrier frequencies (around 100–250 Hz) work better than high carriers. The presets are set up with research-informed defaults.
How long should I listen?
Most users who respond to binaural beats notice a subjective effect within 10–15 minutes. Longer sessions don't necessarily help more. For sleep, 20–30 minutes with a gradual fade works well. For focus, match the session to your work block (25 or 45 minutes). Experiment — individual response varies.
Are binaural beats safe?
For most people, yes — they simply encourage your brain to produce patterns it naturally generates. People with epilepsy, seizure disorders, or who are pregnant should consult a healthcare provider before using brainwave entrainment audio. These are not a replacement for medical treatment.
